Sarah Spencer Westerberg

Sarah McGregor Spencer Westerberg, 97, passed away on Oct. 30, 2017 at Brookdale Assisted Living, Cedar City, Utah. She was born on June 3, 1920 in Perry (now Thatcher), Idaho, to Lenora Bennett and Daniel Wells McGregor, the fourth of five children.

Sarah married Ben Orville Spencer December 8, 1941 in the Salt Lake Utah LDS Temple the day after WW II was declared. Ben was killed while serving his country in WW II in an airplane crash on Biak Island, South Pacific,  January 9, 1945.  Sarah married Charles Vernon Westerberg October 18, 1951.  He died July 3, 1991. One daughter, Judith Rae Spencer was born to Sarah and Ben.

Sarah attended the University of Idaho and after Ben was killed, she attended Utah State University graduating with Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics.  She worked for the Extension Service in Minadoka County, Idaho, taught Home Economics in Shelley and Preston, Idaho.  She also taught first and second grade in Mink Creek, Idaho, and 6th and 7th grade English and Social Studies in Preston. 

She liked to read, sew, crochet and golf. She received many awards for her crocheted items.  Throughout her life she was very active in the 4-H program, winning many awards and trips and has left that 4-H legacy with her family. She was an active member of the LDS Church holding many different positions in the various Church organizations, such as Sunday School Stake Board member, Jr. Sunday School Coordinator and teacher.  One of her favorites was Cultural Refinement teacher in the Relief Society. 

Sarah enjoyed traveling with her brothers, sister, and spouses across the United States. She loved to have her grandchildren and great grandchildren come to visit. The last 14 years of her life she lived in Cedar City with her daughter and son-in-law and at Brookdale the last two years.

Sarah is survived by her daughter, Judith Rae (Ervin) Larsen, of Cedar City; four granddaughters: Shelley Ann Larsen, Peggy (William) Ashworth, LaRae (Kimber) Heaton, and Sheri (Robert) Scott. Great granddaughters: Lexie, Rakell, and Samantha Heaton, Kaitlin Ashworth, McKinley, Angelie, and Ashley Scott. Great grandsons: Kaden Ashworth, Spencer Heaton, and Alex Scott. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers: Lorin and Allen McGregor, two sisters: Jessie Erickson and Lenore Choules, and two sisters-in-law: Virginia Serrot McGregor and Rachel Brown McGregor.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 11:00 am at Webb Funeral Home, 1005 South 800 East, Preston, Idaho. A viewing will be held Friday from 6- 8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home and Saturday from 9:30-1030 am also at mortuary.  Interment will be in the Grace Idaho Cemetery.
