Richard L. Denton, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2026, at the age of 81. He was born on November 9, 1944, in Treasureton, Idaho, to Malcolm and Ida Beth Denton, the oldest of five children.
Richard grew up with a strong sense of responsibility and leadership. He attended Preston High School, where he played football for the Indians. The day after graduating, he and 12 friends proudly enlisted in the Idaho National Guard, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to service.
He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern Central States Mission from 1964 to 1966. Upon returning, he attended the University of Utah, where he earned a degree in Biology and continued playing football—always cheering, “Go Utes!” It was during his time at the university that he met the love of his life, Nancy, on a choir trip to Sun Valley. They were married on January 25, 1967, and shared 59 wonderful years together.
Richard and Nancy were blessed with six children. Early in their marriage, they lived briefly in Pittsburgh, where their sons Steve and Rich were born. They later returned to Utah when Richard began his career with the Utah Department of Health as an Environmental Scientist. Eventually settling in Bountiful, he devoted over 30 years to the Division of Water Quality, where he was respected for his hard work and leadership, earning multiple promotions before retiring.
In 1976, the family established roots in the Bountiful 39th Ward, where Richard remained a faithful and active member. A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many callings, including years of dedicated service in the scouting program. He later served a senior mission with Nancy in the Tennessee Nashville Mission, continuing his lifelong devotion to faith and service.
Richard found great joy in the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter who especially cherished time spent with his sons, including memorable fishing trips to Alaska. More than anything, he loved being with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings Andrew Denton and Annette Denton; and his daughter, Pamela. He is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy; his children Richard Dane (Janna), Steve (Alicia), Daniel, Rebucca (Bryan), and Douglas (Ali); his siblings Loma Prince and David Denton; and 12 grandchildren who will carry on his legacy.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in the Bountiful 39th Ward Chapel, 600 East 1500 South, Bountiful, Utah. Viewings will be held Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday from 9:45-10:45 a.m. both at the church. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. in the Treasureton Idaho Cemetery. Richard will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his love of family, his dedication to service, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. His legacy will live on in all who knew and loved him. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at webbmortuary.com
