Orvid M Pitcher

Orvid M Pitcher 93, passed away at his daughter’s home in Hyde Park, Utah on the 18th of September 2026 from age-related natural causes.

Orvid was born on December 4, 1932 to Nathan Herbert and Gwendolyn (Mouritsen) Pitcher in Smithfield, Utah. He spent much of his “growing up” years in Smithfield until his parents purchased a farm in Trenton. It was in Trenton where he met his eternal sweetheart, Marva Mae Godfrey. They were sealed together in marriage on August 23, 1950 at the Logan LDS temple. Marva preceded him in death in 2015.

Orvid and Marva’s motto, “There’s always room for one more”, was exemplified as they joyfully welcomed each of their five children (Michael, Alyce, Christy, Sherida and Alayna) into their home. Later they were thrilled to adopt Kory and Kendi from Korea. Clara Sonia Galeano (from Paraguay) eventually completed their family as an honorary family member.

Following his marriage, Orvid began working at the Blue Bird candy factory in Logan. He learned the techniques of making fine hand-dipped chocolates and ice creams. He, then accepted a job offer at the Ballard Chicken farm in Benson, Utah. Later, he took a job as a custodian at Sky View High School where he took pride in having the shiniest floors with no scuff marks. He was the go-to man for anything that needed repair. He had the capability of visualizing what was needed to make something work, then he would fix the problem. He ended his formal career as the custodian for Summit School in Smithfield, Utah. He loved his work, the faculty members and certainly the students at both schools. Orvid is also known as the icon photographer of Cache Valley. For over sixty years he took wedding, portrait, and family group pictures. Very often his name will come up in conversations: “Oh, Orvid, he took my wedding pictures.” He loved having perfect photos and making sure his customers were well-satisfied with their pictures. Very late in his career, digital photography was introduced. Orvid mastered Photoshop, and was able to skillfully adjust and enhance pictures. He wished that he would have had this great tool for the thousands of photos he had already taken.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marva, his parents, all of his brothers and sister (Willard, Boyd, Weldon, Budd, and DeNiece Pitcher Spencer). He also joins his two daughters, Alyce (and her husband, Paul Bosch) and Sherida, and his daughter-in-law, Nancy Pitcher.

Those who remain here to wish him well on his eternal journey are his sons, Mike (Nancy-deceased) and Kory; daughters, Christy (James) Benedict, Alayna (Owen) Weston, Kendi (Jeff Lang) Pitcher, and Clara Galeano as an honorary daughter. He has 14 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Linda Godfrey Walker. Additionally, he leaves two sons-in-law, Walter Cespedes and Mark Jones, and a daughter-in-law Jennifer Pitcher.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 26, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Birch Creek Building, 660 West 200 North, Smithfield, Utah. The family will greet those who wish to pay their respects on Saturday September 26, 2026 from 10:00 to 11:30 AM also at the church. Interment will be in the Smithfield Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the many medical professionals at the Logan Regional Hospital and Intermountain Health Care and Hospice for their kind service. A special word of gratitude is extended to Dr. Christopher Kowalski who performed a very risky surgery to repair Orvid’s broken back caused by a traumatic fall.
