Leona Breitenbuecher Chatterton

Leona Breitenbuecher Chatterton, age 98, passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 23, 2026, due to age-related causes. Leona was born on February 12, 1928, to Ernest Breitenbuecher and Ida D. Mendenhall. She married Eugene Darrell Chatterton on August 11, 1948. Together they built a loving family and life together.

Leona lived most of her life in Preston, Idaho, with the exception of spending 20 years wintering in St. George, Utah, following retirement, and the final three years of her life in Smithfield, Utah. She and Gene owned and operated Idaho Appliance and Sport Shop in Preston, where they worked side by side until retiring in 1984.

Leona was a talented crocheter and enjoyed many hobbies, including golf, fishing, traveling, camping, playing games and watching sports, particularly the Utah Jazz. She especially treasured time with her family, who were her greatest joy. She was known for her kindness, compassion, and loving nature toward others.

A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Leona dedicated many years to serving in her church and community. Her faith and quiet example blessed the lives of many.

She is survived by her children, Dennis (Charlotte) Chatterton, Jan (Steve) Fryer, and Larry (Laura) Chatterton; grandchildren Jeff, Jennifer, Brady, Kelley, Jared, Kristina, Holli, and Kaylie; 27 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; sisters Marlene (Milt) Lacey and Ann (Delbert) Rawlings; and numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene “Gene” Chatterton, and infant son, David.
