Not all heroes wear capes. Some quietly anchor their entire family without wanting recognition or placing judgement.
Our dad was the kind of man that showed up for flat tires, hard days, broken fences, and every ordinary Tuesday in between. He was stubborn, sometimes funny, and always had a fishing pole in the back of his truck. He spent mornings at the coffee shop, afternoons in the river bottoms, and most of his vacations wherever the fish were running.
Larry Dean Dahle, 89, passed away on May 10, 2026, in Preston, Idaho. He was born on August 20, 1936, in Logan, Utah, to Lester Davidson Dahle and Anna Moser Dahle. Larry was an only child for five years before his little brother, Max Moser Dahle, arrived — a development Larry was reportedly less than thrilled about at the time. Over the years, the two formed an unbreakable bond filled with countless vacations to Redfish Lake, Idaho, thousands of hours fishing together, neighboring Simmental cattle ranches, and the kind of bond that only two brothers could have.
Larry was 16 and Max was 11 when they lost their mother in a tragic car accident just four days after Christmas. Life did not always deal them the easiest hand, but they had each other. Larry returned home to his Mom on Mother’s Day, the first time she had seen her boy in 74 years.
Larry graduated from West Side High School and immediately joined the United States Air Force. He served in Guam, Wyoming, and California. During his service, he married Gloria Cady of Malad, Idaho, and together they had two daughters, Camille and Shari. They later divorced.
After four years of active duty, Larry earned his crypto maintenance certification in San Antonio, Texas. He then spent the next 26 years as a civil servant working in crypto maintenance at Hill Air Force Base.
In 1961, Larry married Peggie Pickett of Preston, Idaho. Together they purchased a ranch in Preston, where Larry would spend the rest of his life. Larry and Peggie were married for 35 years and raised four children: Mike, Michelle, Jill, and Debbie.
After retiring from Hill Air Force Base in 1988, Larry pursued many ventures including Larry’s Cafe in Preston, real estate, fishing, more fishing, time with his family and always having a beloved dog by his side. Larry was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He spent the last 26 years of his life married to Judy Spackman Dahle.
Larry is survived by his wife, Judy Dahle of Preston, Idaho; his daughters, Michelle Auman of Preston, Idaho; Jill Berry of Lehi, Utah; Debbie (Sam) Campbell of St. George, Utah; Camille (Glynn) Edwards of Marysville, Washington; and Shari Werner of Leavenworth, Washington; his step-brother, Joe (Tammy) Benson of Logan, Utah; 16 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and his loyal dog, Bert. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Anna Dahle; by his step-mom, Ella Ree Dahle; by his son, Michael Dahle; his brother, Max Dahle; his son-in-law, Hank Werner; his step-brother, Lynn Benson; and his step-sister, Peggy Smith.
