LaMonte B Hyde October 8, 1916 to January 1, 2008On Tuesday, Jan. 1st, 2008 LaMonte "Monte" B Hyde passed peacefully from this life from causes related to cancer. LaMonte was the oldest of 5 children born to Amasa W. Hyde and Orpha Leona Baird on Oct. 8, 1916. After Orpha died when Monte was young, he was raised by his stepmother Ruey Taggart, and he helped take care of 3 additional siblings added to the family. LaMonte grew up on a farm in Lewiston, Utah and learned very young how to work hard. He never quit working, and always took pride in keeping up a well-manicured yard, an abundant garden, and his home well-kept and neat. Having been lined up by mutual friends, LaMonte married a city girl from Salt Lake, Mima Irene Simmonds, on Sept. 24th, 1941 in Fresno, California where Monte was stationed in the military. They were later sealed in the Logan Temple. This marriage produced 7 sons and 2 daughters, and life was never dull! LaMonte served as a medic in the Army Air Corp stationed in San Francisco, Burma, China and India. After an honorable discharge in 1945 and a few odd jobs in Salt Lake City, LaMonte and Mima moved to Todd Park/Tooele area where they acquired many long lasting friendships. During these years Monte went to barber school. He finished the 6-month course in 4-months and passed the exam with 99%. He became the best barber around and didn't stop until he was 90. His last haircut was given on May 24, 2007. People came from miles around to get one of his haircuts and head massage! He enjoyed so much the associations of his clients in the barbershop. He would often do "house-calls" for those who couldn't get out. LaMonte was always ready and willing to help whenever a neighbor or friend called or had a need. You could always count on him.While living in Tooele, LaMonte pursued his hobby and love of horses, acquiring the first of many. He was a member of the Bit and Spurs Riding Club, and the Sheriff's posse, and even won a few races. He shared his love of horses and the outdoors with his children and grandchildren, showing them the beauties of the trails and mountains throughout Northern Utah and So. Idaho. After moving to Preston in 1957, Monte involved the community in his love of horses and was instrumental in the 4-H horsemanship program. For many years he would ride his beautiful Morgan stallions in the Preston and Lewiston parades. Because of his concern being away from his wife for too long with her declining health, he finally gave up riding at age 89.LaMonte was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a counselor and later as Branch President in Todd Park, and has been a dance director, chorister, teacher, faithful home teacher, and various other positions.Many will remember the beautiful tenor voice LaMonte was blessed with. He sang in high school groups and musicals, always hummed as he cut hair, and many nights his home was filled with music as the family sang the oldies, and favorite Christmas carols around the piano. LaMonte supported all his children in their music, school, and sports endeavors. He loved going to recitals, plays, baptisms, etc. for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved visiting with and being around his family!LaMonte really loved road trips. He would take his family throughout the Western States to see all the sights. He especially loved Yellowstone, and after his children moved away he would take the grandchildren to enjoy the wildlife and beautiful scenery.LaMonte was welcomed beyond the veil by his loving parents, brothers Norris and Farrell, sister Ilene, and son Michael. He leaves behind brothers Milton (Dorothy), Stanley (Katherine); sisters Glenna (Stan) Richardson, Venice Sorenson; children Boyd, Reggie (Marcia), Douglas, Bob (Carmen), LaRene (Jr.) Chambers, Cary (Nancy), Dawn (Kris) Stoddard, David (Ann), 27 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 7th at 1:00 p.m. at Preston Idaho North Stake Center, 310 N. State St., Preston, Idaho. Friends and family may call Sunday 6-8 p.m. at Webb Mortuary, 109 E. Oneida, or prior to the services from 11:30-12:30 at the church.
