Kathryn Ann Humphrey Smith

Richmond, Utah Kathryn H. SmithRichmond - on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 Kathryn Ann Humphrey Smith, our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and long-time resident of Richmond, Utah moved beyond this earthly existence to join her loved ones on the other side. She was born June 24, 1923 in Tampa, Florida, the second daughter of Rodolph Jackson and Marie Nebel Humphrey. She graduated from Sacred heart Academy and Business College where she obtained her secretarial skills. She worked as a secretary on the McDill Military Bse which is where she met Thomas Earl Smith who was stationed there during World War II.There were married on October 1, 1944 in Tampa Florida. Earl brought her back to Richmond, Utah where they lived together for 62 years and raised five children: Jack (Margo) Smith, Willard, UT; Kathy Bravo, Grand View, ID; Les (Nita) Smith, Richmond, Utah; Ann (Joe) Allred, Centerville, UT; and Marie (Allen) Lundgreen of Richmond, UT. Kathryn and Earl had 29 grandchildren, and at last count 47 great grandchildren. Kathryn dedicated her life to the raising of her family an dserving her friends and neighbors. She spent a great deal of time growing a garded from which she harvested and canned many bottles of fruits and vegetables to feed her family. She enjoyed doing handwork, and spent many hours embroidering beautiful dish towels and pillowcases that she gave as gifts to her children and grandchildren. Endless hours were invested in the kitchen baking bread and having a hot evening meal prepared for her family. She was kind to everybody and reminded us often of what her Daddy always told her, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." She also enjoyed spending time researching and doing genealogy. Mother was our modern day pioneer as she was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1957. Then two years later in April of 1959, Kathryn and Earl and their five children were sealed in the Logan Temple. Mother paved the way for the religious upbringing of her children and set a marvelous example serving faithfully in the church where ever she was called. Her service included being in a Primary Presidency, the Relief Society as a compassionate service leader, the nursery leader for many years, and for at least 40 years, a faithful visiting teacher.Kathryn was happy and grateful for everything she had, always making due wit the simple things of live, never having any of the time saving devices that are considered standard in today's kitchen. The past several years have been a challenge and frustration for her as she suffered the trials associated with Alzheimer's disease. She has remained sweet and innocent, easy to care for, and the little things we did for her were appreciated, and last but not least, she has kept us laughing! She leaves a legacy of hard work, perseverance, and commitment. Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband Earl in January 2007, and her parents. She is survived by her five children, and spouses, 29 grandchildren, and 47 great grandchildren and her only sibling, Helen Marie Humphrey (Sister Kathleen Ann of the Sisters of Mercy), of Albany New York.Funeral services will be held Monday, February 11, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the City Creek Ward Chapel, 150 South, 100 East in Richmond with Bishop Mike Abbott conducting. Friends may call Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at the church and Monday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. also at the Church. Interment will be in the Richmond Cemetery.
