James "Jim" Lynn Rider

James “Jim” Lynn Rider passed away due to health complications on August 26, 2026, at the age of 79 in the Logan Regional Hospital, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Jim was born on April 8, 1947, to Delmer and Georgia Rider in St. George, Utah. He was the oldest of three and had two younger sisters, Eunice and Delna, who have always affectionately called him “Jimmy.” His birth was difficult, leaving him with total hearing loss in his left ear - a condition which wasn’t discovered until he was in the fourth grade. As a boy, Jim was very active and loved being outdoors, playing baseball, spending time with his cousins, and bringing home numerous animals, including all types of snakes, lizards, turtles, and hamsters. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and received his Eagle Scout Award. Jim attended school in Henderson, Nevada, and Dixie High School in St. George.

After high school, Jim was drafted into the Army and served two tours in Vietnam as an X-ray tech and medic. None of us will ever know the difficulties he faced during the war, but it left him broken and struggling with PTSD for the rest of his life. After returning home from Vietnam, he married Cathy Powell and had two sons, Ivan and Erik. They later divorced, and he married Emma Jean Bingham on June 11, 1977, in the Provo LDS Temple, where they were sealed for time and all eternity. They have seven children together—six girls and one boy.

Throughout his life, Jim worked at many different jobs, including lifeguard, river guide, truck driver, mechanic, hard-rock miner, and helping with cleanup after the Valdez oil spill in Alaska. He also spent time pursuing a degree in geology and learning how to draft. He had an adventurous spirit and lived all over the western United States. He enjoyed the outdoors and liked to hunt, fish, camp, hike, and ride horses. He had a green thumb and took great pride in his garden and fruit trees. He also loved woodworking and spending time in his shop. He had a sharp mind, read hundreds of books during his life, and was a self-proclaimed expert on pretty much any topic. He loved his family deeply and did his best to provide a good life for them.

Jim is survived by his wife, Emma Jean; sister, Eunice; and his children: Ivan, Erik, Jennifer, Kristi, Travis, Pam, Becky, Emmalee, and Catherine; along with 25 grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, August 31, 2026, at 10 am at the Clifton 2nd Ward Chapel, 170 W. 100 N. Clifton, Idaho 83228. Viewings will be held on Sunday from 6-8 pm at Webb Funeral Home, 1005 S. 800 E. Preston, Idaho and again on Monday prior to the service from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at the church.
