On a beautiful spring day, his favorite time of year in Cache Valley, Jack Ernest Johns, JJ, 89 was welcomed through the veil. He passed with loving family around him on May 4, 2025. He was the last living member of his generation. We know he was welcomed home with joy and love. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend a, son and brother. Jack was born on July 6, 1935, to parents Otto Ernest Johns and Margaret Elizabeth Jensen in SLC, UT. He had two older sisters Margaret and two younger sisters soon followed Colleen and Carolyn.
Jack watched over his beloved mother and sisters, often as a protector. It is not an overstatement to say his family looked up to him and idolized him. He learned to work very hard as a paper boy, selling papers on the street in downtown SLC. He unselfishly gave the money to his mother to help the family. He also helped his father do extra custodial work.
He claimed to be a shy boy, which was hard to believe knowing him as an adult. He confidently could and would talk to anyone. He said selling newspapers gave him a voice. Jack graduated from West High School. He then started his career with Utah Power in 1953 at 17. The line boss had promised him a job after he graduated. Two days after graduation he was there to collect. He was not asked if he was 18 yet, he didn't tell them he wasn't.
He started as a laborer/helper in the North Temple plant. Then became the groundsman on the high line crew until he was able to get a line apprenticeship. Jack became a journeyman lineman Jan. 1, 1960. Throughout his 57-year career in the electrical industry he held a lot of titles and qualifications. He was a journeyman, lineman, a local agent, and a relay tech with Utah Power and a master electrician and federal electrical and construction inspector through the military. He had national top security clearance. But the highlight of his career was being a start-up engineer on a power plant in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1997.
There wasn't much Jack didn't know about the industry or couldn't at least figure out. He finished his career as an inspector for Rocky Mountain in Dec. 2010 at the age of 78. Our dad was one of a kind. If asked, “When are you going to retire?” His answer was always “About 10 minutes before the viewing.” Work was his purpose and his joy. He loved working and all of the people he worked with. He was well liked and extremely dependable.
Jack honorably served in the Navy Reserves as a Sea Bee and retired after 20 years. Jack had a beautiful singing voice and sang in a dance band when he lived in Circleville. He also sang the lead part in a play in Logan "The Order is Love". He enjoyed entertaining on stage. He also enjoyed boxing, league bowling, horseback riding, skiing, and working out at the gym. He was generous with his time and always ready to assist anyone. But it was very hard for him to accept help, maybe because he was also very strong willed and stubborn and “that’s a fact Jack”.
On August 8, 1974, Jack married his sweetheart Candis WInward in Paris Idaho. He had 5 children Wade (Ami), Cary (Bill), Paula (Bill), Kay Lyn, and Jack Andrew (Saundra). Candis had 1 son, Brooks (Kim). Together they had 4 more children, Brady (Kristyn), Chris (Tiffany), Tyson (Sara), and Chandra-deceased (Darrik). Jack and Candis were sealed in the Logan Temple December 14, 1979. They were married for 50 years.
He is survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family expresses their gratitude to Autumn Care in Hyde Park, and Aegis Hospice Care for their care of Jack as he finished his battle with Alzheimer's disease. Thank you Kat for your kindness.
