Fern Porter

Forever remembered by her family Fern Swainston Porter passed away in her sleep peacefully on January 20, 2018 at the age of 95-years-old. She was born March 17, 1922 in Whitney, Idaho the daughter of John Ersel and Annie Jersena Swainston. She married Blaine Peterson Porter on Sept. 23, 1942 in the Logan Temple.   Fern was very active in the LDS church throughout her life. She served in the Relief Society, Young Women’s, and Primary Presidencies among other callings. Her favorite calling was with the Young Women. One activity she particularly liked was ‘road shows’ where she used her many talents in making costumes. The most challenging calling was ward organist, at which she often practiced to improve.

Today her children and grandchildren display beautifully framed needlepoints stitched personally by Fern’s busy hands throughout several homes. In addition, she loved to share her talents of crocheting afghans and doilies at the Preston fairs throughout the years, and has passed many of them on to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. When each grandchild was married, Fern worked very hard and found it immensely important that they received a special framed doily including their last name to be displayed for their newly built families.

Fern enjoyed a beautiful home and yard. Her yard was often filled with beautiful flowers, animal statues loved by the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and later in life delighted in the bear hand carved from a large pine tree in her back yard. Later in her life she also looked forward to meeting with her sister on a weekly basis at the beauty salon to get their hair done. Fern loved visits, conversations, and time spent with family. Many memories were made and kept while sitting in her living room, rocking in the chairs, and looking out her large windows at the Preston mountains.

Fern is survived by her 5 children Paulette (Irshad) Wali of Henderson, Nevada; Brent (Bonnie) Porter of Idaho Falls, Idaho; JoAnn (Gary) Wiseman of Layton, Utah; Shelley (Paul) Campbell of Weston, Idaho; and Tamara (John) Goodsell of Henderson, Nevada. She is also survived by her sister Venna Herd of Preston, Idaho. Fern also had 26 grandchildren as well as 73 great-grandchildren, for which she could name each and often remember their birth dates. Fern was preceded in death by her husband Blaine Peterson Porter, father John Ersel Swainston, mother Annie Jersena Jensen Swainston, and granddaughter Jill (Wiseman) Corbett.
