Douglas Hampton Smith passed away on July 23, 2026 in Logan, Utah in the company of his best friend, Tommy Hobson. He was born on October 21, 1962 in Preston, Idaho to Peggy Hampton Smith and Reed Edward Smith, the third of their 4 children. He attended Preston High School before going on his mission to Charlotte, North Carolina. Upon his return, he attended Utah State University.
Doug was married to Jeanne Holbrook Romaine from 1985-1996, with whom he had 3 children, Anna, Nicholas, and Cameron. He was married to Louann Randall from 1998-2008, where he enjoyed many years in the company of her three children Daniel, Stephanie, and Michael. Doug remarried in 2017, a fellow missionary he met many years prior in his church mission in North Carolina, Marla Ann Mitchell Surenok.
Doug's greatest passion was cooking, with a special affinity for Asian food. He achieved a lifelong dream when he and his brother, Kim, opened an Asian fusion restaurant, Sumisu, in Pocatello, Idaho. Music was another love of Doug's, with progressive rock his favorite genre. He played drums in a band for many years and was learning to play guitar. He also greatly enjoyed camping, fishing, and gardening, with a special love for growing tomatoes.
While he worked several places, delivering goods in an 18-wheeler was his last and favorite. In this position, he had the opportunity to tour America and sample the culinary delights from around the country.
He is survived by a daughter, Anna Smith, and two sons, Nicholas (Morgan) Smith, and Cameron (Kaitlyn) Smith; 6 grandchildren: Zoe, Rowan, Aelyn, Jessie, Harrison, and Logan; His siblings Kim Smith, Lisa Andersen, and Angela Imperiale; and his mother Peggy Smith. Doug was preceded in death by his wife, Marla Smith, and his father, Reed Smith. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made to Mercy Chefs at mercychefs.com.
