Carolyn Jeanne Kelly Smart, 76, was born July 23, 1949, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Keith and Betty Thorpe Kelly. She died on May 10, 2026, in Preston, Idaho, following a happy family gathering. Carolyn enjoyed a happy childhood in Salt Lake with her only brother, Colin. She graduated from East High School and attended the University of Utah. During these growing up years she enjoyed watching a countless number of space launches with her father; before his untimely death in 1967. Two years later, she experienced the loss of her mother to cancer.
She married Daran H. Carr on December 15, 1969. Daran passed away suddenly on October 12, 1973, leaving Carolyn with two small children, Daran and Daralyn. Two years later, at a church function, she met an eligible bachelor, Wayne Smart. After a whirlwind (?) two-year courtship, they were married (after peaches and before apples) on September 30, 1977. Three children were added to the family--Kelly, Jaime, and Jeffrey. In the fall of 1979, the family moved to Clifton, Idaho and truly enjoyed farm life in a rural community.
Carolyn was an accomplished pianist and shared her skills in many ways over the years: as a piano teacher to over 110 students; as ward choir pianist for over 20 years; as the Rotary Choir pianist; and as the Preston Community Orchestra pianist. But the 'job' she really enjoyed the most was performing with her friends in the Hershey Kisses singing group. They had a lot of fun!
Carolyn was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in many callings in the Relief Society, Young Women and Primary organizations. The high-light of her life was serving with Wayne in the Wisconsin Milwaukee Mission and as an officiator in the Logan Temple. Carolyn also greatly enjoyed her membership in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Carolyn served the community by writing a weekly column for the Preston Citizen for many years.
Carolyn is survived by her husband, Wayne; her brother, Colin (Mary) Kelly; her five children: Daran (Lori Ann) Smart, Daralyn (Shane) Mansfield, Kelly (Robert) Ballif, Jaime (Brandon) Taylor, Jeffrey (Amelia) Smart; 21 grandchildren: Whitnee Kelsey, Brookelle (Nate) Ball, Savannah Smart, Rylee (Brendon) Jones, Scotty Smart, Hadlee Taylor, Matthew Ballif, Jordan (Kylie) Mansfield, Jessica Taylor, Kori Ballif, Amber (Daniel) Matthews, Morgan Smart, Brenden Ballif, Miles Taylor, Ammon Ballif, Michael Smart, Kamryn Mansfield, Addison Ballif, Hayden Taylor, Annalyn Smart, and Oliver Smart; and 3 great-grandchildren: Jace Kelsey, Henry Ball, and Brooks Kelsey and one on the way.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at noon at the Clifton LDS Church, 170 W. 1st N. Clifton, Idaho.
