Carol Metcalf Romney

Carol Jean Metcalf Romney, 83, passed away on June 21, 2023 at Franklin County Medical Center in Preston, Idaho.  She was surrounded by family, including her four children.

She was born on January 27, 1940 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Jack William and Isabel Edgington Metcalf. She loved her parents, and was raised with 4 brothers. She told her children it was not a happy home. She depended on her older brother Bob who was an anchor during many difficult family challenges. In later years, they all tried hard to keep their family connection strong.

From a young age, she was musical and showed great talent playing piano solos, and accompanying others, including her brothers on the violin. She enjoyed working at Primary Children’s Hospital (she knew Dr. Russell Nelson there), taking classes at the University of Utah, and attending social events where she met her sweetheart, Bruce Stewart Romney. After she served for 2 years in the Sweden, Stockholm mission, they married in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Salt Lake City Temple on March 13, 1964. Bruce took a job as a math professor at a newly opened Selkirk College in Castlegar, British Columbia. They moved with their one-year-old son, Sherman. They raised all 4 of their children, and lived there for 55 years in the same beautiful but simple home (the stove that came with the house lasted all 55 years!). Carol was involved in the community, the extremely small, but growing church, and her children’s lives. With a lot of time and hard work, she got her music degree from The Royal Conservatory of Music, and became a teacher of the program with countless students.  She not only taught piano lessons, but also music theory, history, literature, and pedagogy for 40+ years, changing many students lives with her love of music, and serviceable heart. She often invited people to dinner, and was always looking to help others. She was a great listener, and was sought out for advice. She made money stretch much farther than one thought possible. Her patchwork carpet was an example of her frugality. She lived by the rule “use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without”. She was a wonderful cook, making her own bread and other delicious dishes that she shared with so many. She served in many ward and stake callings in the Trail Ward, Cranbrook Stake. She loved doing family history work, and her favorite place was the temple. The 7-hour drive kept her from going often, but didn’t stop her. She loved having fun creating many traditions with friends who became as close as family. She missed her friends dearly when she moved to Preston, Idaho to be next to her daughter, Amanda, after her sweetheart Bruce passed away in 2020. She loved more than anything being near family after so many years of living far away in Canada.

She is survived by her four children, Sherman (Lori), Kenneth (Heidi), Devon (Lynette), and Amanda (Brett), as well as her 21 grandchildren, 24 and counting great grandchildren, and her sister, Barbara (Herb) Clarke, and her brother, Jack (Brenda).  Preceding her in death, is her husband, Bruce, and her 3 brothers, Bob (Robert), Stan, and Stephen.

We are grateful to the staff members of the Franklin County Medical Center, and especially the Transitional Care Unit where she lived for the past 22 months. The exceptional care she received there was very appreciated.  She made many new friends there, and loved being an active member of the Legacy Branch, Preston Idaho North Stake.
