Preston - Arla Idella Russell Ponciano, 91, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 in Preston, Idaho where she has lived the past two years. She was born March 30 1918 in Youngstown, Ohio to Alva and Hazel Russell. Her mother died when Arla was five years old, and she was raised by her father and step-mother Janie.
When Arla was a young girl, her father accepted a position of Scout Executive for the State of Nevada, and her family moved to Reno, Nevada where she spent much of her youth enjoying Scout-related activities. Arla married Bill Ponciano in 1938 in Reno, where they lived most of their lives. She served as a nurse at the former Washoe Medical Center for 33 years before retiring. In later life, Arla enjoyed activity in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, most recently as a member of the Whitney 2nd Ward.
Arla is survived by her children, Bill (Diana) Ponciano, of Preston, ID; and Rosemarie (Don) Olsen of Portland, OR; seven grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and nine great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Bill.
